Starting up this kit and will built it for Andretti as I am a fan






Three bags of green sprues, one black and one grey, some chromes, a figure and the tire set


Typical (decent) Tamiya instructions, Cartograph decals and a PE set...not sure if that came with or if I got it aftermarket.


I don’t think I have built a Tamiya car kit since my teens....maybe 15 the latest. The layout looks exactly as I remeber when I did the gorgeous black JPS....love those cars. This will likely be pretty much out of box, for me, and the plan is to finish around StPatrick’s Day. Because GREEN!!!

Great subject and driver and some sweet PE, will build into a nice model and a cosworth in the back aswell.

Well this Cosworth block put up a pretty good fight today
The stretched sprue clear injectors were the death of me!

Wow that looks like alot of detail for that engine. So tweezers and an electron microscope was in order there!

I fought some wire as injector leads, but stretching the clear sprue was the right trick for it. The diameter is pretty fine at this scale.
I want to get the transmission and rear clip done and take some better photos.

But of course I have to scratch build the battery and leads
I think the Fujimi Enthusiast series have better details than the Tamiyas, sadly. We shall see as I move the build along.

Some progress Friday night/ Saturday after a huge snowstorm and lots of shovelling
There are a large number of paint calls for parts. The brakes had 4 colours and PE
Lots of multi colour parts as well, so taping and spraying and cleaning and on and on....


I got the engine and drive train partially built up to this point

I get a week off for spring break in March, so hoping to make some progress then
There are so many different paint call outs on each part, it takes forever planning and spraying and respraying and touching up....
At the moment it is just baby steps forward
Also finding this hard to photograph for some reason

Great work so far Scott 1 step at a time as long as your going forward that's all that matters.

That studio 27 detail set helps a lot as well
I get motivated by seeing work above and beyond the norm. It doesn't make me want to quit and slam my hands in a drawer...most times
Funny as it was exactly the detail I needed for what turns out to be the fuel filter plumbing. Tamiya makes it look like an alarm clock hanging out in space on the front of the engine.
I might add a few bolt ends and such to more visible areas as well now

I am going to veer a smidgen off the norm on my painting scheme...the rear springs were just screaming at me to paint them clear green over silver.
Probably will do the same with the green body work
I am almost through painting all the rear clip bits now and just need some time for assembly and details..unfortunately a long work week for me

Had a good night of modelling and assembled all of the rear clip portions....engine, brakes and gearbox








I have more wiring and plumbing I want to do and a heat shield for under the exhaust.
Would love to stay up late and forge on, but it is another workday tomorrow so gotta hit the hay

I would just lovingly fondle the box and then just send it right back, promise!!!
This is my favourite engine made yet, a white metal Bugatti in 1/20 scale...they were a simple but gorgeous engine
Working in all metal is fun and challenging all at once...very different than styrene

That is all the base paint and assembly, now the extra wiring and plumbing to do
I am having a hard time finding reference info and pics on what everything is and where it all goes
These were complicated machines!!!

Oh that seems like a perfect template to model by as well Scott! Nice and close too with a somewhat stripped version.

Great work Scott have you looked at Pistonheads for reference they have loads of great reference material on there ususally.

K guys, I need an anatomy lesson
What is the black pot here just in front of the exhaust and what are the lines off of it and where do they go???
I get there is a silver heat shield on the front of the pot and under the exhaust outlets.
Any help greatly appreciated

Hi Scott I've found these instruction from a model factory hiro
I think it's a oil tank and connects to a oil pump and return from the engine block,as race engine run with a dry sump

Damn, Hiroboy's stock of braided line is STILL out of stock...it has been that way for a while or I would have got some
Now they have great pre painted resin hose joints as well...was just painting up some uncoloured ones last night

Got my order in today. Have found a few links that show pics of the plumbing of this and the JPS car...my iMac is better than my iPad it seems

It might be useful to join F1m there's some very knowledgable people there who have a lot of ref material.

I ordered a Hanes Owner Manual book for the Lotus 79 on Amazon last night
I spent most my evening reading the previews on the book, then got lost reading about the preview of the Ferrari 312's and the story of the drivers and then....had to go to bed for work in the morning!!

That's the problem with ref books lot of interesting history, next thing you know it's time for bed.
Had yesterday and today off, sites closed due to the weather house we are working in -4 inside
So got plenty done on the tyrrell.

Boom, it is past my bedtime and I am reading far off topic of what I started.

So my Ferrari awaits 2 part clear, now the Lotus rear clip awaits braided cord
I started the tub and can do some of the detail painting there this weekend, but need the green body paint.
I will try to decant the Tamiya British Racing Green spray can...first time trying that, so will watch Paul's video again.
He didn't spill a single drop. I will be more like this

Just f’d up the white primer on the tub...into the easy off she goes
