First build - Trumpeter 1/25 Hind

Post by RangerNeil »

Coming back to the hobby, as stated in the intro I've opted for the Trumpeter kit of the Mil-24 Hind-E - mainly because I have a soft spot for the ungainly craft the Russians call a "Crocodil" - and at 62 years old with iffy eyesight the bigger the items I'm working on the better. :)

Couple of questions- the instruction sheet gives a set of paintcodes but no reference to the manufacturer of said paint. I have on the painting guide:
FS37038 - Flat Black
FS37875 - White
FS36118 - Dark Grey
FS36375 - Light Grey
FS36415 - Light Stone
FS34098 - Green
FS36239 - Blue Grey
FS34087 - Olive Drab
FS32473 - Orange

I guess a flat black is a flat black - but the rest.... Does anyone recognize these paint codes as to manufacturer or is there somewhere I can go and look that will give me the Humbol, Tamiya etc. equivalents. Or even the equivalents to the RAL Codes actually used in real life...
And the instruction sheet says to use a "bright blueish green" for the cockpit. Having been given the Newark Air Museums Mig 25 and 27 to play with with a couple of times as part of a Living history group I can see the colour in my minds eye but it would be handy if a manfacturer made a correct colour for Russina cockpits??

Lastly - I got hold of the Eduard BIG kit for the Trumpeter Hind which includes paint masks for the Czech Tiger scheme - however I'd like, as said in my intro, to build mine as part of the Soviet air arm attached to the 40th Army in the Aghanistan intervention so has anyone got any thoughts on D&N masks as opposed t free-hand painting for the cammo patterns used??

Those are Federal Standard paint codes. Take a look at this site.

    Thanks folks - that's useful info! :)

Interestingly - Trumpeter call the Soviet body colour light stone and give it the FS code 36415 - but when you look it up it gives that code as a "Beige Grey Stain" that looks nothing like the yellowish colour on the diagram. Guess I need to do a lot of digging to get the right match. :)
At least now I have some good starting points though so thanks again!! (shame Humbrol have dropped their "Authentic Colours" range!!)
