Drill Bits

Post by Donkeywalloper »

Hi all

This may have been answered before, so apologies.
I have three drills (Hand type), which are used to bore holes in plastic.
All three have chucks either end that grip different sized drills bits.
The really, really small drills (diameter of a pin), when the jaws clamp together, don't grip the drill bit.
Is there a specific drill for smaller bits, or do I resort to wrapping Tamiya Tape around drill bit and wodge it in that way.
I need to drill some pretty small holes to except wires to mimic 1/35 Radio / Intercom wires.
In advance, :cheers2:

DW, you could try the tape thing. But as a fore warning the tape glue will make the metal "Greasy" and could cause the bit to slip. It will if your are drilling a hard substance. Been there done that one..... I have 2 handles. One I got from @# Hobbytown that they swore would go all the way down..... and water flows up hill. When my Tamiya small bit got here and none of the chucks fit ( had one in the car tool box) I ended ordering the small Tamiya handle and that one works just fine all the way down to .4mm. But give it a go. Nothing ventured nothing gained!

  Or you could try something like this [see link] thicker shanks but be careful as they can break easily if abused.-

Sounds like you need a pin vice that closes completely.

I have one with four variable sized chucks on two reversible inserts, like this:

the smallest chuck closes off completely and will grip pretty much anything

I use it for drill bits down to 0.2mm - you have to be careful though as if you don't get the drill bit directly in the four grips of the jaws and you tighten it up to hard, it'll snap your drill bit.

I combined the suggestions from the two posts above. Used my trusty Tamiya pin vice and broke off the smallest drill bit from Hawkmoon's suggested drills. It's very short once inserted which prevents snapping to a certain degree but I guess it depends on how deep you need to drill :thumb1:

try these.... ANY side pressure will break them, but they are good and all the one shank size.
