ElCapitan's Airfix 1/72 Chinook HC1

Post by ElCapitan »

Decided to join in with this SIG as I found this kit on ebay. I've been looking for it for a while and haven't had much luck!

Image

My uncle flew these for years, and as a child I had the pleasure of sitting in the cockpit of one at RAF Odiham while it still had the pictured camo pattern. I remember being extremely jealous of my brother who got to climb up onto the roof! I also have fond memories of the low-level flybys we got whenever he was flying up to Leuchars or Lossie. Shame we didn't have camera phones in those days!!

Welcome aboard Rob, I live on the Wallop\Odious flightpath and one regularly comes over at 200ft at 2300, they're either practicing night insertions or trying to get back before the naafi closes....

Aaand we're started!

Nice top-opening box with one bag of sprues in it. The moulding looks pretty good - nice engraved detail and minimal flash. Decals look like they'll be OK.

Image

I made a start by building up the cockpit. I'll paint it all in situ apart from the instrument panel, which will be easier to paint separately.

Image

There were some window frames to put in, which didn't exactly fit very well...

Image

I'll put some plastic putty in the gap later.

I've not been getting as much free time as I'd have liked to recently, but managed to do some work on this yesterday.

Painted the cockpit and put the 2 fuselage halves together. No dramas here but quite difficult to hold the fuselage together as they only join at the top. The bottom is a separate piece that will be added later.

I've had to leave modelling on the backburner recently, so not progressing as quickly as I'd have liked with this. Managed to do some work on it last night. Mostly filling and sanding unfortunately - almost every join on this kit needs filler! I also built up the engines and glued all the windows in place. The clear parts are so thick they don't sit flush with the fuselage :wall: I'm not sure what I can do about that though, as I'm not going to start sanding clear parts.

Image

I did do a little test though to see if it's true that TET cannot be used with clear parts - I used it on all these parts and there were no adverse effects.

You're doing a cracking job on a challenging kit Rob. Definitely watching this one!! :th: :th: :cheers2: :cheers2: :pop: :pop:

Expressing my ignorance here and will ask what are all those protrusions down the left side of the fuselage ?............aerial supports ? Seems to be too many for that.

They're for the HF antenna. I'll use some rigging wire for it.

Usual Airfix fit issues I see even though it's an Italeri rebox of the late 90's. You got it all in hand mate :th:

They were always referred to in the Army as Whocka, Whock due to the distinctive rotor noise. They are unmistakable (like a Merlin).
Its always to an Ex-Infantry lad a unique sound that on a few Exercises meant End-Ex (End of Exercise), as a Chinook picked you up from the middle of nowhere. I also have been dropped off (literally once, with all my kit, Bergen and a Gimpy and Face-Planted into wet mud from a couple of feet up) from the ramp, into God knows what.
An amazing build and this is gonna look truly awesome when finished.

Thanks for all the comments!

I'm going to remove some of the antenna supports actually, as the configuration doesn't match an HC.1, from what I can tell from photos. I won't be able to match completely, but It'll be closer.

Also the winch above the side door shouldn't be there, and it looks garbage, so I'll get rid of that too.

Had a couple of these Thwocka over the top of me yesterday - love that distinctive sound.

This is coming along nicely Rob, hopefully you'll get enough bench time to get it in paint by the end of the month but I know that's easier said than done sometimes! :cheers2:

I think once it's had a base coat then I'll be able to do the rest in front of the TV - that'll be the brush-painted disruption pattern, decals, some weathering and varnish which I usually brush on anyway. Fingers crossed I can get all that done.

Working from home now, which gave me a bit of time to get this in primer. I'm happy with how it's looking. Most seams are invisible, and I can live with the ones which aren't.

Nice work Rob, looking good and the paintwork looks nice and smooth. I have a Chinook on my wishlist, though probably gonna be 1:48 and likely the Italeri kit? Just keeping my eye open on a certain auction site ready to add it to my ever growing stash!

Will be following your build, keep up the good work.

Now I think I'll move onto this silly camouflage nonsense before masking and painting the black on the underside, rotors and anti-glare.

My original thought was to leave it open until lock down is eased, but will probably leave it undetermined for now and as long as people are posting updates I'll keep it open.

If it goes quiet for a couple of weeks then I'll put up a notice and see if there are any last takers.

Edging this closer to completion. The last few days I've done the decals (with the help of my 4 year old son, when I needed 3 hands), I gave the whole thing a light dry-stippling of Vallejo Medium Grey to fade it all a bit and give it more of a dusty look, then gave it a coat of Testors dullcote and unmasked the windows. Now just need to do the wheels, rotors, wipers, antennae and maybe some sandy pigment if I can get my hands on some.

That's right. The chinook wore this camo during special forces operations in the first Gulf War. I got to see them in the hangar shortly after their return to the UK, and they hadn't been repainted yet.

Hi Rob, If you're still working on this one I've decided to close down the SIG for the end of July. Would be great to see your Chinook in the reveal section if you get chance, but obviously don't rush it now you've got this far :cheers2:
    Cheers, Neil
