Transparency colour - using an ink wash

Post by Daishi12 »

This is where I had a bit of a brainwave - the instructions call for the middle panel of the cockpit windscreen to be painted clear blue. I don't have any clear paints so was a bit stumped. I decided that a small experiment was in order.

I masked the inside of the canopy and put a very thin coat of Revell Contacta Clear on the center panel. I then over-painted when the Contacta was tacky with Derwent Inktense sea blue. Here is the result :-

Derwent Inktense is an artists specialist supply item and is effectively a solid, water-soluble ink in a pencil format. It can be used as a pencil and then blended with water, or a tiny amount can be mixed with water and used as a liquid ink. The only downside is that they are expensive to buy. (I was able to get a set for Shelby (MrsModeller) from work as a present {I love when Head Office messes up price changes - the set went from £36 to £9 and also staff discount})

Hmmm think I would have just bought Tamiya x23 and thinned it. I think liquitex also do an ink like that but it is expensive to.

The reasons I didn't get the Tamiya X23 are - My local model shop was shut at the time and I wanted to crack on with the build and I've been wanting to try the Derwent Inktense on at least 1 kit. Also I knew I could wipe it off if it didn't work :)

I think next time I'll try diluted PVA glue as a base for the ink.
