Guidelines, Rules & Prizes...

Post by Paul »

What is a Group Build (GB)?

A group build is where everyone on the forum (who wants to participate) gets together and picks a mutual subject to model. It will usually run over an agreed span of time (every 4 months for ISM). Everyone who's entered posts up their progress (in pictures) as they build the model with a final reveal and showcase at the end. There are usually a specific set of loose rules to say if it's got to be OOB (Out Of the Box) or you can add extras such as PE (Photo-Etch), after market resin parts or decals etc. There's never a rush and we will allow enough time to participate in the GB and do all your usual modelling at the same time.

There will be 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes kindly sponsored by Models R Go for every GB. I'd like to take this opportunity to personally thank John & Mandy at Models R Go for their continued support, it's greatly appreciated. Please go and check their website out by clicking the banner below, their customer service is second to none.

Because at ISM our ethos is that it doesn't matter what you build or how it turns out, as long as you enjoyed the journey, the way who gets the prizes is determined is going to be totally different to every other modelling website! It's not going to be just the prettiest or best built model that wins or places, the prizes will go to the best overall build thread. This means the more back story to your model you post, the more updates (with pictures) you post, the better the explanation of your techniques to achieve the end result (inc your youtube vids) you post, the better chance you will have of getting placed for a prize. Basically what this means is that the more you share your information, the better the benefit to the modelling community, which in turn benefits everyone of us. So, it doesn't matter if you're all thumbs, just started modelling last week, or can't achieve an exact replica of the subject you're building, we want to see that you've enjoyed the journey to the end result, no matter how it's turned out and most importantly, that you've had FUN getting there.....

Group builds are great fun and gets everyone working together towards the same goal and helps to get modellers out of their usual comfort zone and try something else whilst sharing their tips & techniques with the whole community. If you've never entered one before, don't be shy and have a go, we'd love to see your work.... :D

D Day Group Build Guidelines

Objective: Build and share any vehicle, aircraft, ship, figures, dioramas etc involved with an/or depicting a D Day scenario. Again, this will be quite a generic group build where anyone can enter any vehicle involved.

PLEASE READ.....What qualifies as a D Day subject.....
Vehicles/aircraft/boats & ships/figures of any kind from any side (Allied/Axis) involved in D-day itself. A lot of these vehicles would have carried on across France and throughout the war so, would be fine to use as long as they were there on D-Day they will count. Aircraft have to have the right squadron markings etc. plus invasion stripes. If you want to do a show bird, as long as it has the markings that it had on D-Day then we don't see a problem with that. Same with armour and dioramas the unit depicted needs to have actually been involved on the day and a diorama must depict a D Day scenario. If you are not sure what you are allowed to enter then please ask T3hGuppy, Lee or Paul

Group Build Guidelines...

1. Any subject involved in the D Day landings and events following
2. Any kit manufacturer
3. Any scale
4. Anyone can join regardless of skill level
5. There is no restriction on material or any after market products.
6. Scratch building is allowed.
7. After market decal sets are allowed.
8. Dioramas are allowed.
9. You can enter as many times as you like.
10. All kits MUST be in unstarted condition - no exceptions (damaged while in transit sprue parts are allowed).
11. All entries must have a build thread in this GB forum area for the entry to be valid.
12. A progressive build thread must be posted - which must include sprue and box shots, regular picture and/or video updates with comments on hints & tips - by sharing your build progress others can learn.
13. Your final reveal must include at least 4 still pictures of your model.
14. HAVE FUN

If you're not sure of anything then please PM T3hGuppy, Paul or Lee, we're here to help.

Duration: 4 months (16 weeks)

Start date: Friday 23rd May 2014
Finish date: Friday 12th September 2014 at midnight GMT.

Don't forget - It's not going to necessarily be the prettiest model that gets placed, it'll be the overall build thread, the contribution made and the information provided by that member that decides the prizes.
Places will be chosen by the Admin and their decision is final. Good luck people :D

I think he following 6 months should give everyone enough scope Dan. We would need the full back story for those sort of entries though...

Great Group Build and I am looking forward to taking part.

Just to clarify the requirement...many Axis units were nowhere near the area on DDay itself and did not become engaged in the struggle until days or weeks following the initial landings (M Wittman for example, who I think arrived on the scene on the 12th). Is there leeway (or even, Lee-way) if an Axis subject is chosen?

Hey Rob as said we are giving a fair amount of leeway.

Well, here's one: 13th June Wittman (who was up North on the 6th) and his merry band knocking seven bales of stuff out of the Allies at Villers-Bocage. Same would apply for many armoured units which poured into the area to try to push the Allies back into the sea in the days and weeks ahead

(But I am thinking about a beach scene anyway!)

Will join this very cool GB later.
Just wanted to shed some light on the Axis and aircraft regarding D-Day and what one can build or not.

To most D-day is all about USAAF and RAF regarding air operations. No surprice since the allies had an incredible superiority in numbers.
There is also great myth surrounding the actions of the luftwaffe on D-day and beyond. One common one is that the allies had total air superiority.
This is not true, but due to the scale of the operation and the huge superiority in numbers, it might seem like the LW where nowhere to be seen.
Not surprising since on 6 June, the Allies disposed of 2,100 4-engined, 600 two-engined and 3,500-4,000 single-engined aircraft, Luftflotte 3 could counter only with 319 aircraft for both day and night operations - a relative strength of 20:1
So yes we all know about the allied Aircraft, where almost every available type was involved. However this is also true for the LW.
The axis Luftflotte 3 in Place to counter the invasion had almost all types of aircraft, from day and night fighters to dive and Heavy bombers.
So if anyone is insecure, you could build most german aircraft types in service at the time if You wanted to.
Some examples: Bf109 (fighter and bomber), FW190 (fighter and bomber), Ju87, Ju88, Me410, FW200 and so on...

From the US Navy report: THE G.A.F. AND THE INVASION OF NORMANDY - 1944, just to get a taste of what was going on.
(Found here, very interesting Reading! http://www.history.navy.mil/library/onl ... rmandy.htm )

"Between 6 and 13 June in day and night attacks Luftflotte 3 flew:

2,588 fighter sorties and
1,683 bomber and torpedo sorties.

The highest figure achieved for fighter operations was 476 aircraft on 13 June, and for bomber operations, 392 aircraft on 8 June. The first of these attacks was directed against the army in the field, the second on the Seine bay and the mouth of the Orne. On 10 June there was a combined raid of Ju 88's and He 177's on an American convoy from Falmouth. Use of Hs 293 glider bombs in this attack proved a failure; most of them were shot down by flak from the escort forces and steamers. In the early hours of 13 June, 91 torpedo aircraft of Ju 88 successfully attacked a convoy in the Portland Bill area. In addition to operations against ship targets in the extensive region of the Seine bay and the Channel area, attacks on vessels unloading at and near the bridgeheads took place daily."

In contrast, if I can remember correctly, the allies flew 12000 sorties on June 6 alone...

:cheers2:
