Cheap spraybooth. Homemade.

Post by Tangles »

Hi folks, I built a spraybooth last weekend, took some shots, thought you might be interested having a look. It's cheap and easy. Once I got the right fan if virtually fell together. I've been using it ever since and it works a treat.

I started out with these items. The big white thing is a carcass from a clothes dryer bought from a scrapyard for $3.00au. The filter mat is from an air-conditioning place, Industrial in this case. They cut it to size. This was $21au. The fan was a cheapy $12 job, but I didn't end up using it as it was too flimsy and I had to change the pitch of the blades to reverse it (the motor didn't change direction when I reversed the polarity, my AC/DC theory is long passed. lol). So a standard exhaust fan was substituted. $21.00. And a light. Any light will do although I will eventually install a nice long overhead light to reduce shadows. Anyway, the pics:

The starting set:

Had to do some stripping and panel beating. All good, didn't take long:

Next drilling and riveting to get the thing squared up and solid again:

Stripped and a basic cleanup:

The fan Mk.I got rejected for fan Mk.II:

Check for fit, perfect:

Did a wind tunnel test with a stick of incense, you may be able to see the smoke on its vertical axis. lol:

The finished product setup, then at work, perfect size and height, vented straight out the window obviously:

I did score another table that sits under it now:

Still some tidying up to do, I want to square up the front with a nice frame, it looks a little ratty. And as I said install a good light setup. Other than that, she's good to go. Hope this gives you some inspiration and ideas.
Thanks for watching. :thumb2:
Cheers, Simon.

Some good ideas there, I am a bit short on cash and a paint booth is the only thing stopping me from buying an air brush and compressor.
This is certainly the way I would go too, rather than spend tons of money on a pre built one. All the ones I have seen so far were very expensive.
Thanks for sharing.

Mark and Leo, thanks fellas, yeah it was a bargain for sure, and pretty easy in the end. Nice to have a professional 400 dollar jobby I'm sure but at the end of the day as long as this keeps the fumes out and the paint off my rented walls the models wouldn't know the difference and I'm happy. lol
Cheers, Simon.
