IL-2 Shturmovik 1/48 scale Tamiya

Post by rodrant »

Still have about two months to do something on this GB , so I decided for a third entry in this great GB !

Undicided as I have two options , a MIG 15 BIS and the Tamiya 1/48 IL-2 , decided for the shturmovik , as the MIG is a good option to the future Shinny Things GB :-)

So here it is my third entry in this GB :

Image

The main Air-ground fighter-Bomber of the Russian Army !

It will be an OOB build, no PE , no Resin after market ...

The box with the sprues ...apart from me to peek inside :geek: , still all incomplete !

Image

Another color scheme , but will go for the box art color scheme , like the eagle in the tail , and the patriotic writings in the fuselage :-)

Image

Sprues:

Image

Image

Image

Decals and instructions :

Image

they get us a mask to the clear parts, but seems the it is uncuted , so you have to cut it yourself , glad that lately Tamiya give (sometimes) pre cuted masks , do not like much this ones , but better than having none :

Image

Image

little booklet with the history , photos and strategies of the plane , nice !

Image

Image

Image

First of start the build , I always get all the paints needed , and in this build , we have a lot for a plane !

Image

Image

The color scheme that I will do , the 8th Gv OShAP ( will have to see what this means ... :-) )

Image

other color scheme , also nice :

Image

all the paints reunited for the build ...

Image

starting on the cockpit ...

Image

this is a clear part that will be all painted as the interior color XF-22 RLM grey ( and I will use the Tamiya advised paints , so it is a little strange to use a RLM color in a Russian plane ;.) ), first masks so that we do not paint the small windows that this have , this part will be where the pilot seat goes and divides the pilot cockpit from the rear gunner !

Image

MAke a start on the pilot ! not the most breautifull figure but seems he will do the job ...

Image

Image

first decals ...the cockpit instruments ...see the nice eagle for the tail :-)

Image

The instruments panel
Image

Did a wash in the pilot after apllication of a clear coat ...used Tamiy apanel line Brown ,just to give the figure a little depth ...

Image

the cockpit ready ...real nice and full of detail !

Image

Image

He seems sad to be in the cockpit ...

Image

Image

Rear gunner bay ready too ...attached (so it seems...) the fuel deposit ...even being a so hard to down plane , i do not have feel very confortable to have fuel on my back ...

Image

still some more finishing details to do ...

Image

Image

Image

More to do today , see ya next build thread !

:cheers2:
Cheers ,
António

Well fellow modelers :-)

This is going fast ! The kit is wonderfull , This is one Tamiya kit that makes their fame , this is pure engineering !!!

All fit nicely ! All is comprehensive on what and where to go ...recommend it definitely !

So I started on the fuselage ...engine upper cowling :

Image

Image

Image

fuselage halves :

Image

some paint on the details

Image

Image

engine ...really do not know to what is the need to paint it in xF-16 Flat aluminium ...I think ot wont be visible in the end ...but I like to follow instructions :-)

Image

Now to fit the halves I used Tamiya Extra Thin Quick Type ( I love this glue for this work !!!: ) only I placed a little stripe of masking tape to place the glue ...

Image

Radiators placed in the bottom hull

Image

In this we can see the nice detail of the plane surface ! Really a great kit !

Image

Wings placed ...the fit is awesome...superb ...and again with this Tamiya glue only by a great mistake we need to use putty ! Or this kit is so good that all fits !

Image

For some builds that I haven't a plane with no gaps in the wings or on the underface ! Maybe the Mosquito , remember that the build was similar !

Image

You see that tiny gap there ...yes ...me and my modeling knife make waste here ...:-(

But will be the only place were I will put some putty !

Image

on the other side also no gaps !

Image

that is all for today ...

thank you for seeing the thread !

a new update ...

The fit of the model is superb !

Image

At this point I was seeing the instructions , and before Primer and painting , I should place the gear landing ...if not could be a hard to do task after painting the all fuselage ...so I place the gear and after will mask it !

Image

This small caps must be placed after the gear , that is fixed in the interior ...

Image

Image

Then ...another strategy o how I will paint the cockpit glass ...it should be painted in the interior with XF-22 , the same cockpit interior color .

Well Tamiya in their instructions mention a Technical Tip ...to paint before from the putside with that color , and later to paint with fuselage color ...well I will try it !!! :-)

Image

Some sponge to fill the wheel bays ...

Image

and the cockpit glass painted with XF-22 from the outside

Image

THis is all grey ...so with the flash we hardly see it :-)

Image

decided to add the cannons and the landing light beacon

Image

Image

all primed in grey

Image

Pre shading...something that I think I never do this stuff well :

Image

Image

and voilá ...the Big bird (it's is big for a 1/48 plane this one ...nice wing surface , and beautifull plane ! ) in it's three color scheme camo ...XF-22 grey , XF-58 Olive drab and a mix of XF-52 and XF-59 5:1 ratio ...that give him this nice light brown

Image

XF-22 Light Blue for underside ...

Image

Propelers painted X-8 Gloss Black , and the rudder is XF-7 Flat Red ...nice colors :-)

in the back you see all small parts already painted and assembly , Bombs , rockets , the rear gunner , MG for the rear and ammo ...the rear gunner could b tricky to assembly as we must do place it and adjust his arms to the MG ...will see , also to mask the rear cockpit was hard as the thing is opened ...I can imagine flying in winter in Russia in this plane ...but ok ... :wtf:

now to finish , is to paint all small details , the oil filter in the wing , the cannons , and the usual stuff , clear coat decals , clear coat , washes ...and so on ...will try the Ultimate Dark wash , the new product that I received about a week , will give it a try on thisone , it has such nice detail in the surface , one of the best planes that I build lately !

hope you liked !

I only just saw that you started another project for this GB, António! What a beautiful aircraft! If I ever find the courage to build one after 40 years, I'll go for a Tamiya kit, at least in 1/48th scale. Smaller won't work with my eyesight and shaky hands when it comes to the paint job. :)
Great build and paint job, mate! I like the pilot the way you painted him! Can't wait to see more! Good luck and a lot of fun with your build. Take care. :D Jens

Last update on my third participation on this great GB !

Propelers and rudder now painted !

Image

Gloss Coat with Tamiya TS 13 Clear !

Image

DEcals ...this is the eagle that I mention , a nice decal and give this plane a very nice scheme !

Image

Also some patriotic writing in the fuselage !

Image

the decal part went ok , I was afraid of these decals , nice but could prove problematic ..,in the end no issues and this decals were placed with no Big issues !

Another coat of Clear to protect the decals and will try the Ultimate Dark Wash 'New Formula' :-)

Image

What I have done ... ;-)

Image

Image

after I did some aluminium paint with a sponge just to depict some small weathering done by the pilots accessing the plane :-)

Image

AS for the wash the result is great ...and will use it often from now on ...to be honest I prefer to use pin wash , but since today I am now 100 % addicted to these wash ...no smell , come out with water and the result is really great ! This plane has some of the nicest panel detail that I Build and this wash makes it work !

Image

Image

VEry nice detail !

Image

Image

SO , after this is the final reveal ...I will only present the plane , as now three builds are enough , I think :-)

Thank you to all that comment , see and follow this build ! For me it was a very nice build and good to do quick !
