My DIY Track Link Tool

Post by RobBye »

In search of a good tool for assembling individual track links, and not finding one I liked, I decided to build my own.

Using a chopping board from IKEA as the basis, along with a few common fasteners, this is what I came up with:

This jig does precisely what I'd hoped it would do, and only cost me about $5 Canadian. Being made of high density polyethylene, it was easy to machine and resists all chemicals a scale modeller is likely to expose it to. Even CA adhesive won't bond to it (thus, the need for assembling it with screws).

For those interested in a more in-depth account of how I built this jig, I've posted a video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/BGDpVvuYbUs

Cheers!

Thanks guys. It was quite a bit of fun designing this tool and putting it together - more so, when it actually worked!

As for building them for sale, maybe I'll collaborate with Paul and Lee to include it into Ultimate's line-up. ;) Don't wait for that to happen (never going to), just head to IKEA and get started on making your own. :th:

That is a very neat piece of work.
I would like to add my 2 bob's worth.... If it had a ruler built into it. Mirror models have you build a track with so links to a inch.
However you said no glue will hold it in place....damn...the flip side.

Excellent work, well done

PS... STAINLESS steel rule could be screwed in :th:
