Hawk 1/48 Cessna Skymaster O-2A/O-2B

Post by Russ72 »

As the title suggests, this is a review for the Hawk Model Company's, 1:48 Scale Skymaster (1969). No video, so hopefully this won't seem to long winded.

Let's start with the box art.

A Boy's Future Begins with Modelling.

This kit was bought second hand, and it's now 45 years old, it can only be expected that some parts have worked there way loose of the sprues. Despite this, all parts are in excellent condition. No scratches, and NO FLASH. Panel lines are recessed, and fine, and rivets are raised, and could probably do with a little ease back. Here's some photos.

The clear parts are very nice, finely cast, scratch free and very clear.

The Decals need a little love, but all can be read.

The Instructions are well set out, a full description of both variants you can build are given. The O-2A the Forward Air Control (FAC) is possibly the most challenging. The FAC requires extra glazing, this is provided in the kit in two ways, decals, or for the more experienced modeller, clear parts are provided and the styrene has to be cut in order to fit them. The O-2B the Psychological Warfare Airplane is a little more straight forward. No styrene to cut, just add the PA Speakers. There's no formal colour call outs, for example the interior is Red. Here's the Instructions.

I picked this up on ebay for $29.50(AUD, incl p&p), touch and go on value during the bid, but now its my hands and I've had a good look at it, I think it was worth it. Since a lot of parts were off the sprues it gave me a chance to do a little dry fit, the fuselage fits well together, and the wings will end up looking like they were cast as one piece.

The only two downsides I've come across so far are both in the interior. The instructions would have you decaling the instrument panel, which is a flat piece, however no such decal exists. The second is the lack of any detail, which may require some scratch building.

This one is going to be my build for the Vietnam GB, time will tell which variant. Unless I can find another one, and then it'll be both.

If you're reading this bit, than thanks for hanging in there.
