Favourite Brand of Modelling Knife & Sprue Cutter

Post by TechHead »

Hi All,

I am in the market for a new modelling knife, and possibly some better sprue cutters, and was wondering what make and model you used and what were your favourite(s)?

Thanks in advance, :th:

Sprue cutter Xuron 2175 ET - expensive (cheaper from overseas sellers) but a joy to use
http://xuron.com/index.php/main/consumer_products/3/14
Knifes - Swann Morton Retractaway handle (the ability to retract the blade into the body of the holder is a useful safety feature) with an assortment of their fantastically sharp blades and a small metal bodied Stanly knife with 9mm snap off blades

I really like my Tamiya cutter for sprue. I also have the Xuron 2175ET, I haven't used it much.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

I found myself in Hobby Craft (strange that.. ;) ) and picked up a Swann Morton Retractaway knife with a 10A blade size. Nice build quality and I like the added safety feature of the retractable blade, especially with a little one around the house.

Took a look for the Xuron 2150ET though this appears to be quite a tricky beast to track down in the UK, so will either place an order from overseas for one or the Tamiya. Shame that modelling tool prices are so inflated here in the UK compared to overseas.

Also, I didn't realise that PE bending tools were sooooo expensive, it may be a while before I buy one of those.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Cheers,

Simon

All of my modeling knives are X-Acto brand, although I do use bulk #11 blades bought from Tower Hobbies (supplier of my RC addic...err, "hobby" needs). My sprue cutter is a set of Plato 170 Shears - originally intended for fine electronics work but do a superb job of cleanly snipping parts away from sprues. I do have a set of Xuron 2175 shears but they're just a bit large for cutting tiny parts loose.

Confusingly, Xuron appear to do two cutters with the 2175 code. One (2175) is a general flush cut jobby while the other (2175ET) is a designated sprue cutter. Mine have very fine points and are good for most parts

My sprue cutter came from a car boot sale was brand new but I can't remember the manufacturer, with regards to knives I have a few Swann and Morton scalpel handles each with a different size//shape Swann and Morton blade. Each has a different use one being a small curved blade which is ideal for p/e just sit the blade on the p/e and "rock" the blade gently and the cut is made, superb fine cut every time.

I use many different types of knives & sprue cutters.

1. Xuron Sprue cutter 2175 ET.

2. Various X-Acto Knives with many different types of shapes of blades.

3. Swann and Morton scalpel handles each with a different size/shape Swann and Morton blade. such sizes are 10, 10a and 11.

4. For those very small parts on the sprue, I use Toe Nail cutters/clippers from Boots (UK), used for very small or for those very awkward parts on the sprue.

Since Paul may have missed this .....I believe he may have these cutters https://www.bnamodelworld.com/hobby-too ... 8271be6c79

and yes this shop can be expensive or can be cheap, but not today. You can get these much cheaper if you shop around. Personally not yet convinced they are really any better than the xurons, but I am open to it.

:cheers2:

EDIT
I found this review and there are many others out there if you google it. This review gives a good common sense approach to the issue and comes out in favour of the Tamiya set, but prefers the xurons. I think he also did a comparison review on the god hand set as well somewhere.

Thanks.

I also send him a pm, and I got a reply. Yes, he uses the sharp pointed one.
Seeing some reviews on youtube, it looks there is not much difference between the Tamiya one and the Xuron. I ordered the Tamiya, because the Xuron was hard to get.

Saw the review on the God hand and it looks incredible, but that price.... :wtf:

I have quite many knives and cutters (tried most over the years as I love good tools). The God Hands cut the cleanest (but they are a bit fragile as pointed out). My favorites are the Gundam Planet Premium side cutters. They are much like God Hand in their clean cut (single sided blade), but made with a stronger metal (just a weee bit thicker metal). No problem with the tips breaking on it like the God Hands. I have yet to try the Mr Hobby single side cutters.

For knives, my two favorites are The older Citadel hobby knife no longer made (the new one is not as good), and the Fiskars Heavy duty softgrip hobby knife.
